Malini, Ashwin Mushran and Turning Point Wines hosted Salsa Night at Zinc a new hip lounge in Central Mumbai. Virginia and I thought this would be a fun evening given that
a) It’s my BIRTHDAY WEEK
b) We love to DANCE
and last but not the least c) Malz hosts the most fun partaaaysss ❤
So we put on our dancing shoes and headed to Zinc , Virginia in a cute short number with a funky headband and me in my cool animal print dhoti pants from Zara’s latest collection.<3
The night was as fun as expected , a bunch of people from FC were there and then there were the real deal Salsa dancers from Salsa India who btw were SUPERB !
So anyways I am super excited about the fact that I learnt/tried something new this year on my birthday (as I do every year 😉 ) . This time it was the Bachata !! The word “bachata” refers to the rowdy, lower class parties in some of the poorest neighborhoods and it originated in the Dominican Republic …lol so not my style…but once in a while it’s good to let your hair down…right ?
The dance is easy as long as you get the basics , because there’s not much turning and twirling to be done…(unlike Salsa)….the basics to the dance are three-step with a cuban hip motion , followed by a hip tap on the 4th beat just like in other Latin dances (salsa etc.). The knees should be slightly bent so the performer can sway the hips easier. The early slow style in the fifties from where everything started was danced only closed like a Bolero. The Bachata Basic Steps moving within a small square (side, side, forward and side, side, back) are also inspired from the Bolero but in Bachata also danced with syncopations (steps in between the beats) depending on the dancers mood and the character of the music.
The movement of the hips is very important because it’s a part of the soul of the dance. The leading is done just like in most other dances, with a “pushing and pulling” hand communication. Although there is a lot of body movement in Bachata dancing, the hand communication is better understood when most of the movement is performed by the lower body (from waist down); i.e. hips and footwork.
For those of you who want to join Salsa classes I recommend you check out :
P.s. ❤ Malz for another fun night !!! Hug !
